Tablet Questions
What tablet do you use?
WOW YOUR TABLET IS EXPENSIVE! Do you recommend it?
What tablet do you recommend?
iPad Pro or Cintiq?! Well there’s no right or wrong answer so here’s my opinion.
What tablet do you use?
- I use a Mobile Studio Pro by Wacom, 13 inch. I also have an iPad Pro and Apple pencil (gen 2) for travelling. Tablets prior to my current one; Wacom Bamboo 2008, Wacom Bamboo Fun & Touch 2010, Wacom Intuos Pro 2013
- You can check out my gear here: https://www.amazon.com/shop/twirlyful
WOW YOUR TABLET IS EXPENSIVE! Do you recommend it?
- TL;DR - No, if you don't travel much and are mostly stationary.
- It is expensive!! I believe I got it in 2017, it was about $2k and I spent half a year saving up for it. Please don't dismiss the hard work that I put into trying to get this tablet by just thinking I'm "rich".
- At the time, I was in need of a laptop along with an upgrade from my intuos pro tablet. So my Mobile Studio Pro ticked BOTH of those needs at the time and it worked out really well for me during my University days.
- At the time of writing this up (August 2, 2020 - about 3ish years later), it really depends on your lifestyle. Would I recommend it to myself now? No, I wouldn't. After graduating, I don't go out to campus and I don't really travel a lot anymore due to the pandemic. It's usually in cintiq mode ALL the time now (connected to my main PC) and I don't use it as a laptop as much anymore, so a regular screen tablet would be just great for me. And when I'm out of my house/travelling, I wouldn't be drawing either - unless I really needed to work on things, then yeah. But I typically plan to not have work during trips. I would probably just doodle things on my iPad which is great for travelling too, if that gets to happen again.
What tablet do you recommend?
- For beginners, I would start off with an inexpensive tablet to test out. I personally would recommend tablets from Wacom since it is industry standard and from personal use, they’ve held up pretty well.
- I have never used any other tablet from another company besides Wacom, so I also do not want to give uninformed opinions on other brands/prodcuts.
- Nowadays, there are new(er) companies like Huion, XP Pen, Ugee and possibly more. I have never used their tablets before (because Wacom was the only thing available for me at the time) so I don’t really have any opinions or information about them. I heard that they are good though, but be sure to do some research and look at the reviews.
iPad Pro or Cintiq?! Well there’s no right or wrong answer so here’s my opinion.
- This is really a personal preference thing! I do have both of them and I can say I use my Mobile Studio Pro ( in Cintiq mode ) more than I do my iPad. It’s more because I stream and I’m also on my computer all the time, so I use my MSP more. It also doubles as my laptop during my university days (I’ve already graduated so it’s in Cintiq mode almost 100% of the time lol) so I was able to use it as a regular computer and also for when I travel I can work on commissions. I also use it for finishing up artwork and bigger pieces.
- You can also do that with an iPad, but I just prefer doing completed works on my computer. Whenever I use my iPad I’m usually out of the house or traveling. Sometimes I’d use and doodle on it when I’m being comfy on the bed/couch, but most of the time I’m on my computer where my MSP is. So that’s pretty much it!
Program Questions
What program do you use?
What canvas size do you work on?
What program do you recommend?
What brush do you use?
What program do you use?
- Clip Studio Paint EX — https://www.clipstudio.net/en
- Stream Labs OBS for streaming and selective recording.
- StreamElements OBS for twirlbot and music.
- Procreate (On iPad)
- Reflector 3 (Mirrors iPad/mobile device to PC so I can stream it)
What canvas size do you work on?
- I usually start off with an A4/letter size canvas and adjust to my liking from there.
- All formats are at 300 dpi.
What program do you recommend?
- Clip Studio is a great program, I’ve used it for years and while I do own the EX version, all the features I use are available in the PRO version. I have EX for when I want to try and animate things because there’s no capped amount of frames.
- “It’s too expensive/I have no money” — Clip Studio often goes on sale for 50% off so be on the lookout for that!
- If purchasing it is completely out of the question, I recommend Medibang Paint which is a free program. — https://medibangpaint.com/en/ I personally have not tried it too much but it’s a nice basic program that’s works cross platform (ipad, computer, phone).
What brush do you use?
- I often use the “Dark Pencil” tool which is a default brush in the program. I also use RedJuice999’s brushes which is available for download for free on his DeviantArt page.
- On Procreate, I've been using jingsketch's free brush pack. Mostly the sketch round brush.

Art Questions
How long have you been drawing?
Do you do commissions?
Do you do requests? Can you draw something for me?
Did you go to art school?
How do you make prints, stickers, merch?
Do you have any tips or tutorials?
How long have you been drawing?
- Since I was a kid. I started drawing digitally around summer 2011, so probably 8-ish years on and off. I am not sure how many hours I actually put into drawing/painting.
Do you do commissions?
- I do sometimes! Check the status on twirlyful.net/comms.
Do you do requests? Can you draw something for me?
- For the most part, no. But sometimes I do sub requests or giveaways here and there.
Did you go to art school?
- Yes. My major in University was Art with a minor in Art History and I graduated in Summer 2018. My classes focused in mainly on graphic design since my uni did not have an illustration program or classes. Prior to my university days, I did not have art classes in primary and secondary school.
How do you make prints, stickers, merch?
- Prints — I use a printer and I print on paper, cut them to size and there’s my print!
- Stickers — I use a printer and I print on sticker paper (with adhesive on one side) and I cut them out using my silhouette machine.

Do you have any tips or tutorials?
- I do not have any tutorials, however you can ask during my stream or check out my YouTube channel to see my process. If it’s something I can do or explain, I’ll give it my best shot. But I am not a teacher, so take whatever I say/share with a grain of salt. Don’t compare your progress to someone else’s, everyone’s art process is different and unique.
- A tip I stand by for any beginner artists is to draw what you like! If you find the hobby enjoyable drawing things you like, you are more likely to not burn yourself out and give up.
- And if you’re ready to progress to something more out of your comfort zone, work on some fundamentals and studies that you like. If you don’t like hand studies, try backgrounds or animals! There’s always something to improve on, and I believe you learn and absorb information more easily when you find things enjoyable.
Stream Questions
How long have you been streaming?
What are rolls?
Can I song request?
Do you have a playlist?
Why can’t I !gamble?
How long have you been streaming?
- Use !uptime in chat to see how long I’ve been streaming for the current stream session.
- In general~ I’ve been streaming on Twitch since 2015, on and off because of school. Prior to Twitch, starting in 2011, I streamed on livestream.com, join.me and picarto.tv (also on and off) just so I can share art with my friends and show them what I’m up to! Streaming has changed a lot over the years so I don’t know if I would consider my early streams as the same streams I do now.
What are rolls?
- Channel points are visible below the chat box and can be used to redeem fun rewards! !rolls are the stream currency for gambling and non-sub song requests.
- Subs receive 20 per 10 minutes.
- Bits : 100 Bits = 100 Rolls
Can I song request?
- Song requests are now off due to DMCA strikes on Twitch as of recently!
Do you have a playlist?
- This is my old playlist that I used to have playing on stream: http://bit.ly/twirlyPlaylist
Why can’t I !gamble?
- !gamble command has a 5 minute cooldown per user.
